Researchers
worked around the clock filtering samples. The daily routine
continues as the CTD package is launched, samples are collected,
tested, and analyzed. The diligence and dogged
determination which the scientists and researchers demonstrate are
admirable.
At 1300 hours the Chief Engineer gave a tour of the engine room. Anyone
entering the engine room must wear ear protection. It is
extremely loud in the engine room, and that's how the people who
maintain the place like it. The reason being, if it is quiet, then
there's a big problem.
The engine room contains 3, 1500-kilowatt
generators for primary propulsion, 3, 725-
kilowatt generators for primary electric power, and a 250-kilowatt generator for emergency power. For exact specifications
on all the ship's services, go to http://martech.ocean.washington.edu/
and click on the operational manual.
Land is out of sight for the time being. The seas are gently rolling; the engines are running; and life is good.
