Last night in the twilight from eight to 9 PM the whales were
breaching. The ocean was calm and the whales performed in the
distance. The sunset glowed to the port side. Sunset around
9:40.
This morning the ship was in the port city of Ketchikan, Alaska.
The snowcapped mountains are boldly standing guard over "Alaska's
Gateway." The Zodiac was lowered to starboard by one of the
three cranes on-board. Scientist Mark Wells and three crew
members motored to the dock. One member of the crew will be
flying from Ketchikan to his home in Portland, Maine. A new crew
member joined the ship as did Media Specialist Ron Lisnet. All
aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson heads back toward the Hecate
Straight, only this time the vessel will sail south along the eastern
shore of the Queen Charlotte Islands.
Researchers continue filtering samples, viewing slides, and
collecting data as we sail to the southern tip of the Queen Charlotte
Islands to gather more samples, before heading out into the open
Pacific Ocean. Am I nervous? “It's
fear of the unknown. The unknown is what it is. And to be frightened of
it is what sends everybody scurrying around chasing dreams, illusions,
wars, peace, love, hate, all that--it's all illusion. Unknown is what
it is. Accept that it's unknown and it's plain sailing. Everything is unknown--then you're ahead of the game. That's what it is. Right?” - "John Lennon"
