We are located just south of the Queen Charlotte Islands off the
coast of British Columbia. There are approximately one hundred
and fifty islands associated with this chain. The islands are
governed by the Canadian province of British Columbia. The strait
that separates the islands from the mainland is known as Hecate
Straight.
This is the location where the Haida Eddies form.
According to research scientists the importance of these eddies was not
identified until the late nineties. The connection between
satelite observations and previous expected measurements from research
vessels helped reveal striking changes from what is considered"normal"
science. These anomalies in the past were difficult to explain
before the realization of the Haida Eddies.
The ship is within ten miles of shore and the water is
deep blue with white bubbles because of the lack of algae. It is
predicted that as the ship travels toward shore and enters an eddy, a
front will occur and the water will change the color from deep blue
to a greenish brown; hence, life is stirring in the oceanic eddy.
