The
R/V Thomas G. Thompson is about to enter the Strait of Juan
de Fuca on our final day of the Wells Research Cruise. Late into
last evening scientists and educators worked to break down the
incubators on the fantail of the ship. These lovely
aquarium-looking structures provided the environment to grow and
preserve the
phytoplankton. After disassembling the incubators, all parts
need to be washed in fresh water. The dozen or so hoses were
also pumped with fresh water, rinsed, coiled, and packed. This
morning the containers that housed all the equipment had to be washed
with fresh water as well. Afterward, they were left to dry in the
sun.
This has been a great opportunity to experience the life
of an oceanographer while at sea. The education, stories, and
sights have truly been beneficial; but it has been the scientists,
researchers, media specialists, MLTI-eMINTS Mentor, editor, and crew that have enabled one middle
school teacher to promote science through a genuine life experience.
Cheers mates!
