Today is a busy day with many CTD casts. Scientists and
researchers hope to relocate the Haida Eddy that was transected earlier
in the cruise to compare and contrast data. Satellite altimetry,
the measurement of height or altitude, gives the location of the Haida
Eddy in contrasting colors on a computer monitor. The ship
heads for the coordinates displayed on the monitor but stops to deploy
the CTD along the way. Analyzing the components of the water
column from samples collected at these stops tells scientists when they
have reached the eddy. Verification of the real time coordinates
with the real time data confirms the location of the Haida Eddy.
Continued CTD casts transecting the eddy will reveal
where we are within the eddy. All the data collected is
saved and shared.
